Reno Air Race 2014

Dal 10 al 14 settembre  2014 si è tenuta la 51^ edizione del Reno Air Race presso l'aeroporto di Reno Stead. Il Reno Air Race è una gara di velocità a circuito chiuso unica al mondo. Sei diverse classi di aerei si sfidano a soli 60 metri da terra, con aerei a elica e Jet che raggiungono una velocità di oltre 500 km orari! 
Purtroppo nelle prove di qualificazione Lee Behel, 64 anni è stato coinvolto in un incidente mortale durante una manche di qualificazione del Campionato Nazionale Air Races mentre volava con l'experimental GP-5, "Sweet Dreams". Purtroppo un guasto meccanico lo ha fatto precipitare senza possibilità di salvezza.

The 51st National Championship Air Races, take place each September at the Reno Stead Airport a few miles north of Reno, Nevada, USA. Annual event is the only closed course pylon racing event in the world, and is the world’s longest running air race. Six different race plane classes battle just 60 feet from the ground, with the Unlimited and Jet classes reaching speeds over 500 mph! 

Besides the on-your-feet action of the races, spectators have close-up access to racing aircraft, pilots and crews in the “pits.” There’s a world-class air show, military display and demonstrations, aircraft display and great concessions. Unfortunately a race plane crashed on the course during qualifying Monday 9/8 at 3:16 p.m. killing the pilot, during a Sport Class heat race.Sport Class & founder pilot Lee Behel, 64 was flying in a single-engine experimental GP5 when it appeared to suffer a catastrophic mechanical failure and crashed at the north end of the racecourse.
